Did You Know? Doubt can only be removed by action. What do you need to DO to reach your college/career goals? What actions do you need to take to build the life you want? You don’t need to map out your entire life, but you will want to focus on the next steps to get you headed in the direction of your dreams. Look at this video clip and then consider identifying a career goal and some of the actions you need to take to reach it.

Make a SMART Career Goal
Ask winners for their keys to success and they will tell you that they set goals and then take action to reach their goals. After all if you don’t know where you are going, there is little chance you will get there. The best goals are SMART. Check on this site to see how SMART is defined, and scroll down the page to print out a form to help you create an action plan.

Fill In Your Formula for Success
Don’t try to keep your ideas and plans in your head. You need to write down your goals so you are not longer thinking about them but doing something about them. A written goal gives your mind’s eye a vision of a specific destination and helps you get where you want to go. Dr. Phil has outlined seven steps to help you reach your goals. These steps are outlined on your Career Clues guide. Under each step, answer the specific question about your goal.

Now Take Action
The next step in the process is to develop an action plan. Just as you wrote down your goals, it is helpful to write out a plan of action items to accomplish each goal. To give you a better idea of how to do this, look at the action steps a Princeton University student wrote out to help him reach his goal of finding a summer internship at a New York or Boston law firm. On your Career Clues Guide write down specific actions you will take to reach one of your goals.
